CLEVELAND, Ohio -- A Cleveland taxi cab driver is robbed and attacked on the job.
The attacker took his money, his cab and stabbed him, with injuries that left the man fighting for his life.
Dewana Jones heard the doorbell ring at her Cleveland Road home around 1 a.m. Sunday and thought something was wrong.
"It scared me because 1 o'clock in the morning, you know, you hear the doorbell ring at 1 o'clock in the morning, you now it's not going to be anything good, something happened,” she said.
Jones was right. From the window, she and her father could see a man bleeding in front of their house.
“He just kept saying somebody stabbed me. I've been robbed. Help me. He was begging for help,” she said.
Her father, Joe Jones, could also see the man was badly hurt.
"He come up the porch and came off and lay right there in that driveway, couldn't go no farther," he said.
The man, 60, was able to tell them that he is a driver for Americab and that he was driving down the street when someone flagged him down for a ride.
“He was saying someone popped up, and they just had a knife and just started stabbing him,” Dewana Jones said.
She could see that the man had been stabbed multiple times in his upper body and arms.
“I mean his whole entire, all his clothes, just soaked in blood. He was just soaked in blood,” she added.
According to police, the attacker also robbed the driver of his money and took the cab. Later Sunday morning, police recovered the stolen taxi cab on East 79th Street, just a couple of miles from where the cab driver had been stabbed and robbed.
Dewana Jones and her father hate to think what might have happened to the cab driver had they not answered their door in the middle of the night.
"For him to come here, it was just a blessing for him to come to this house for us to be able to help him. I am praying he will be okay, because he was begging for his life,” Dewana Jones said.
Anyone with information about the stabbing and robbery is urged to Cleveland Fifth District Police at (216) 623-5518.
