CANTON-The Canton Police Department will be welcoming nine new officers to their force.

Mayor Healy announced during Monday’s city council meeting that the City of Canton has been awarded a COPS grant through the United States Department of Justice to hire the additional officers.

Mayor Healy hopes to have the officers in place around the first of the year.

The three-year, $1.125 million grant requires the city to come up with an additional $411,000 in matching funds in order to take advantage of the grant.

Canton Police Chief Bruce Lawyer said in a news release, “The Canton Police Department is extremely pleased and grateful to be recognized in our policing efforts. With the hiring of these nine officers, we can make a significant impact on the quality of life in our community.”

This is the third time the city has been awarded the grant.
