Man dies when SUV explodes into flames after crash, 1 arrested

CLEVELAND, Ohio — A man was killed when his SUV erupted into flames after a crash on Valley Road early Sunday.

According to Cleveland police, it happened in the 4200 block of Valley Road at just after 1 a.m.

The preliminary investigation indicates that a 45-year-old male driver was driving a 1998 Toyota 4Runner SUV southwesterly on Valley Road in excess of the 25 mph speed.

The driver failed to negotiate the curved roadway on Valley Road, going off the left side of the road and hitting a wooden utility pole. The force of he impact caused the SUV to spin counter-clockwise out of control.

The 43-year-old female driver of a 2009 Dodge Nitro SUV that was also heading southwest on Valley Road collided with the Toyota. The Toyota then erupted into flames, with the driver trapped inside.

He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The female driver of the Nitro was arrested for operating a motor vehicle under the influence of alcohol.
