CHESTER TOWNSHIP, Ohio -- It is a crime that has left people along Bates Road in rural Wayne County asking ‘why’?

A 93-year-old Chester Township woman was stabbed multiple times after she answered her door to a stranger Saturday afternoon.

"Shocking. I mean we're all shocked in the community. We can't even figure out why. What's the reason?" neighbor Bob Wenger said.

The Wayne County Sheriff's Office said the man asked the woman for gasoline. When she told him she didn't have any, he stabbed her.

"It makes no sense to me at all. I can see no reason for an assault on a 93-year-old woman," Wenger added.

Neighbor Dale Imhoff wondered about another motive behind the crime.

“It seems to me it was intended be a robbery or something to that effect because there are other people who could have helped a lot better than an old 93-year-old lady," Imhoff said.

The woman was able to give deputies a good description of her attacker and saw that that he was driving a red vehicle.

The sheriff said the suspect is a 24-year-old Ashland County man. He was arrested on unrelated charges Saturday night. The sheriff said charges related to stabbing of the 93-year-old woman are pending.

Authorities are investigating if the suspect has targeted other homes in the area and may be responsible for other crimes.

Anyone who has experienced a similar situation is urged to contact the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office.
