LAKEWOOD – St. Edward’s potent running game bounced back in a big way Saturday after struggling against Glenville last week.

The Tarblooders’ defense limited the top-ranked Eagles’ feature back Cole Gest to just 57 yards on 20 carries.

But against St. Joseph Regional Prep (N.J.), Gest exceeded those numbers in the first quarter, running for 62 yards and a touchdown.

He was just getting warmed up.

The speedy Gest exploded for 93 yards and another score in the second quarter, as the Eagles raced out to 28-0 halftime lead, and cruised to a dominant 42-0 win over the visiting Green Knights.

Senior quarterback Brett Kean tossed three more touchdown passes, giving him six on the season and a St. Edward (3-0) record 38 for his career.

Alex Stump and Shaun Crawford combined to catch 13 passes from Kean, including all three touchdowns.

The talented twosome now has 32 grabs and six total touchdowns in 2014.

After three home games to start the season, St. Edward travels to Cincinnati next Saturday to face the Elder Panthers (2-1).

The Eagles have beaten Elder four straight seasons.
