Thursday night a few high schools got a jump on the traditional Friday Night Opening.

In the state of Ohio, 25 games were held, with a few involving teams from Northeast Ohio.

The pep talks were done, the uniforms fresh and clean and the adrenaline pumping.

Defending state champion Akron St. Vincent-St. Mary  faced the Rams of Akron Garfield. The Fighting Irish won 45-10 while Akron Firestone was blanked by Archbishop Hoban, 24-0.

Massillon Washington took on Massillon Perry and won 37-30.

Further south and east, Cleveland John F. Kennedy was on the road playing at the school that is dealing with a lot of controversy due to the rape case of over a year ago, Steubenville. The Big Red won handily, 49-12.

Up in Cuyahoga County, the Benedictine Bengals were at Byers Field in Parma facing Normandy. The Bengals piled up 55 points in the first half and won by a 62-13 count, thus using, no doubt the new rule that keeps the clock running  when one team leads by 30 or more points in the third quarter or later.

Rocky River was at Fairview where the Pirates opened the season in style, winning 45-12.

Thursday was just the appetizer; Friday night is the full course. The Smorgasbord of high school football and FOX 8 will be ready with Friday Night Touchdown. See you at 11 p.m.
