CLEVELAND --Officials confirm the body of a missing swimmer has been found.
The Coast Guard was searching off Whiskey Island early Monday morning for the body of a man believed to have drowned.
The man was a 33-year-old visiting from New York.
Around 7:30 p.m. Sunday, he jumped off a boat with his girlfriend. They were swimming to shore when he started to struggle. People on boats and on the beach heard him yelling for help and tried to help but were unable to save him.
The Coast Guard and dive teams from Cleveland were there in minutes and continued their search for hours but visibility and debris on the bottom of the lake created a challenge.
We've heard it over and over again - Lake Erie is a dangerous place to swim.
Just last week, two people drowned at Euclid Beach.
"This is kind of set up like Euclid Beach Park is. You go out to about six feet and then it drops down to 10 real quick. So if you're not an advanced or an experienced swimmer, you're going to run into trouble out there," said Asst. Chief David McNeilly with the Cleveland Division of Fire said.
