Police: Man steals cruiser with suspect in back seat

AKRON– Police say a man stole a cruiser during a traffic stop.

According to Akron police, an officer stopped a car at South Broadway St. and Cedar St. around 2 a.m. Saturday.

The driver was arrested for not having a driver’s license and she was put in the back of the cruiser.

While the officer was getting an item out of the woman’s car, police say a man jumped into the cruiser and drove off with the woman in the back seat.

The officer tried to stop the suspect by reaching in the driver’s window of the cruiser; she was knocked to the ground and was treated at the scene for shoulder, hip and knee injuries.

Police say when the man finally stopped the cruiser near the intersection of East Exchange St. and Cedar St., he refused to get out and resisted arrested. He was tased and taken into custody.

The suspect was identified as Shawn P. Douglas, Jr., 19, of Columbus. He was charged with felonious assault; unlawful restraint; resisting arrest; obstructing official business; failure to comply with police orders; escaping; and disrupting public service. Douglas was booked into the Summit County Jail.

The prisoner in the back of the cruiser was not injured.
