BAKERSFIELD, Calif. — A couple married for 62 years died the same way they lived: together.

According to KERO, Don and Maxine Simpson met in a bowling alley and got married a few years later.

They traveled all over the world and adopted two sons.

About two weeks ago, Don fell at home and broke his hip so he was taken to the hospital. Maxine was also battling cancer and had been for years. Her cancer progressed.

Their family set them up in the same bedroom, their beds placed side by side.

Their granddaughter, Melissa Sloan, heard Maxine’s last breaths. Four hours later, just after Maxine’s body was taken out of the room, Melissa checked on her grandfather. He was gone, too.
