WINCHESTER, Va. — She’s known as the mysterious “woman in black,” walking on foot in a black robe and carrying black luggage through several states.
After capturing attention all over the country during her journey, part of her mystery is solved, and police are now asking the public to leave her alone.
Police Winchester said Wednesday they were called Tuesday night to reports of nearly 50 people gathered near a bank to see the woman, Elizabeth Poles, 56.
“For her safety and the safety of others, officers took her to an undisclosed location and provided her with food and shelter,” the department said in a release on its website. “Officers spoke with the woman who says she is from Winchester and intends on staying in the area. The Winchester Police Department wants local residents to know that she will be part of the community and to respect her privacy if you see her in the area. She has expressed to officers that she wants to be left alone and is asking that the public respect her wishes.”
Poles has been seen and photographed walking through several states including Georgia, West Virginia, Kentucky and Ohio. A Facebook page was created to document her journey. It’s called “Where is the Mysterious Woman in Black?”
Police told ABC News that Poles: “was on a mission that has something to do with faith and religion.”
Her brother, Raymond, told ABC News said Elizabeth was in the military for a decade before moving to North Carolina for treatment at a VA hospital.
He said she began asking about black robes and traveling to Virginia.
