ALBANY, New York — A customer at a diner in New York left his server an 878 percent tip on his bill — as a birthday present to himself.

According to the Times-Union, The Ginger Man waiter Michael Shaft didn’t believe it at first. His customer was celebrating his 47th birthday with his wife at the time. Their bill came to $113.89.

The birthday boy wrote on the receipt, “Pay it forward. My birthday present to me!” and left a $1,000 tip for Shaft.

Shaft said he tried to pay it forward with the tip — and gave more than half to his co-workers. He used the other portion to make repairs to his car.
