CANTON TOWNSHIP, Ohio — Officials said a man tried to run away from the accident scene after causing a fatal crash.

It happened on I-77 near Fohl Road in Canton Township around 5:25 a.m. Friday.

The Ohio State Highway Patrol said the driver of a passenger van headed northbound on the highway lost control, crossed the grass median and hit a southbound pickup truck head-on.

Leone Turpin, 28, of Canton, was driving the pickup truck.  He was taken to Aultman Hospital and pronounced dead.

The 20-year-old identified as the at-fault driver was not injured.

He left on foot but was taken into custody shortly afterward.

At the time of this report, troopers were consulting with the Canton City Prosecutors Office about criminal charges.

Alcohol was said to be a factor in the crash.

Witnesses indicated there may have been others who left the scene of the accident.

A search using K-9 officers and the Highway Patrol’s Aviation Unit yielded no other people associated with the crash.

This is such a tragedy for this 28 yr old man & his family to happen to. The person who hit him head on had no license plate on the vehicle & probably no operator license. The laws in the state of Ohio need to change. These people get into the country on a temporary Visa & drive without a license.
