CLEVELAND, Ohio — A city police officer was taken to the hospital, and a suspect was shot in a confrontation after a robbery on the East Side Saturday night.

Officials say it happened at the Family Dollar near East 34th Street and Payne Avenue.

Police union officials confirm that gunfire was exchanged with the suspects after the robbery, but that the officer was not shot. He does have minor injuries, including a gash to the head.

One of the suspects was shot, however, according to a police department spokesperson. That suspect’s condition is not known.

A second suspect was taken into custody at the scene.

Cleveland police are still investigating.
