NORTH OLMSTED, Ohio – Spruce Primary is one of four elementary schools in the North Olmsted School District for preschoolers through the third grade. It is a place where learning and students come first.
“Boost is something that you come to school extra early to work on math and reading,” first grader Andrew Saliba said.
The students’ hard work shows in their academic achievements. Last year the students scored well on the Ohio Achievement Assessment.
“The third graders at Spruce Elementary school had 100% in reading, 97% in math. And, that's because our students work so hard every day to do their best,” third grade teacher Terri Katana said.
You are likely to find Spruce students in computer labs and using technology in the classrooms.
“We have chrome books because we sometimes get online tests we have to do for the teachers. Also, we're using these iPads to research our animals we're working on,” second grader Jackson Thogmartin added.
Spruce students also stay on track with the reading marathon program. It started in the summer and continued into the school year. There are incentives to get students to pick up a book and read.
"If you read 15 minutes for 50 days, you're going to get one of these T-shirts,” second grader Jenna Christner said.
Second grade teacher Cindy Derrick sees reading as the basis for everything in life.
“If you can read, you're going to be successful in everything. I hope that this is going to instill a love of reading," she added.
Spruce students not only read actual books, but they also read and listen to stories online to build fluency and comprehension.
At Spruce Primary, the goal is to have stellar students develop into good citizens.
And, this is place were character counts. The students follow six keys to good character: fairness, trustworthiness, respect, citizenship, caring and responsibility.
They also give back to the community. They have donated to the area food pantry, to the giving tree and they have sent supplies to soldiers overseas. These are just some of the reasons Spruce Primary is proud to be this week's Fox 8 Cool School.
