JOHNSTON, R.I. (AP) — Rhode Island authorities say a 71-year-old man with Alzheimer’s disease and dementia had lived with his dead wife’s body for at least two days before officials entered the home this week.

Police in Johnston say the man’s 67-year-old wife died a few days ago and he wasn’t aware that she had passed. Authorities say there were no signs of foul play.

Authorities say the man called the Fire Department on Wednesday and officials found the woman’s body and a dead dog. The home was condemned because of what authorities called deplorable living conditions.

The man was taken to a hospital for an evaluation and officials were trying to contact his family. The medical examiner’s office is investigating how the woman died.

I took care of my mother for almost 3 years before she passed. I was fortunate enough to be able to be with her almost every day. She lived with another relative who worked full-time and I was able to stay with her for several days during the week. It made me realize that there are so many elderly, ill people, some without full use of their faculties, that have no one to look after them or even just look in on them once a day. If this situation were different this tragic occurrence might have been avoided. That makes me so sad. I feel so bad for this family; this must be devastating for them. I wish there were more people who could help the elderly but I realize sometimes it’s not easy. I send my blessings to this man on the loss of his wife; on some level he may understand what happened. I also hope that the rest of the family finds a better environment for the man. He deserves that much.
