Turnpike Crash Victims Named

SANDUSKY COUNTY, Ohio — The Ohio State Highway Patrol released the names of the three people killed in a Turnpike crash in Sandusky County Wednesday.

They were identified as Hannah Matheny, 20, of Parma; Grzegorz A. Piwowarczyk, 42, of Palatine, Illinois; and Janice M. Robb, 66, of Schererville, Indiana.

Two separate crash zones near milepost 102 and 101 trapped some 50 vehicles between them.  Most vehicles sustained little or no damage.

Trooper Andrew Clouser, 29, was seriously injured when he responded to the crashes to investigate.

Restrictions and delays along the Ohio Turnpike in Sandusky County were expected throughout the day Thursday as crews worked to remove vehicles and debris.

Eastbound traffic was being diverted at Exit 91 for a time but two lanes have since reopened.  Traffic is also permitted to move westbound.

SkyFOX flew over the scene before dawn to find mangled and abandoned vehicles.

According to the Ohio State Highway Patrol, Clouser was investigating a crash in the eastbound lanes of the turnpike near the 102 and 103 mile markers at about 1:25 p.m. Wednesday.

At around 2:50 p.m., another crash occurred, pinning Clouser between two vehicles.

Authorities said he suffered serious injuries to his legs and was taken to the hospital.

He was listed in critical condition Thursday morning.

The Ohio State Highway Patrol sent a message of appreciation on its Facebook page:

"We would like to thank all of you for your thoughts and prayers for Tpr. Andrew Clouser that was severely injured in the crashes yesterday on the Ohio Turnpike. He remains in serious but stable condition at Mercy St. Vincent Medical Center in Toledo. In addition, please continue to keep the loved ones of the three killed in this tragic incident in your thoughts and prayers as well. We should have updated information out soon."

    Yet this morning fat old guys in their pick-up are flying around 271 and 480 cutting people off a tire iron will help them

      I saw that guy in the pickup truck you are talking about. He cute us off too this morning. Some people really drive crazy and don’t care about others on the road.

    After driving home from Michigan on March 1st I can understand how this accident could happen. The roads were icy and snow covered. You could not see any lanes. Truckers would come flying up behind you with their bright lights on and horns blowing as they blew past you. After passing you it was a complete white out and you would have to pull over till the snow settled. As bad as this storm was and the high winds they should not have permitted large trucks to drive these roads.

      Amazing how you just point out trucks with bright lights on I think your full of bs ya of course if we can go faster we will go around you and cause we have 18 tires instead of 4 we do pick up more road grime then you do. Tried of people like you always trying to blame the big truck. Let me point out studies show that a 4 wheeler cause more truck wreaks then a 18 wheeler why cause you cut us off then slam the breaks or cut us off to shorten our stopping distance when coming to a red light or a stop in general. In closing I guess we are your friend when u need close food a car or your house cause what ever you buy from anywhere guess what somewhere down the line it was on a truck remember that.

        Honestly drivers, regardless of driving a rig, sports car, truck whatever, get a bit stupid and cocky when driving. I know whenever the weather changes, I don’t leave my home unless I have to, simply because I have to worry about other vehicles on the road trying to save 10 seconds to their destination and they don’t pay attention to anyone else. The past couple of months trying to drive to church has been mayhem. Even on freeways, I will go a lot slower then posted speed simply because there is no lane visibility. Coming from a family of truckers, I do agree with you, smaller vehicles tend to pull jerk moves when it comes to a rig, not realizing it takes so much more time and room to stop one, and that intensifies when the roads are iced. It’s fine to be confident in your driving abilities, but for the sake of other on the road, regardless of what you drive, be cautious, because you can’t predict anything when you can’t even see the road you are driving on.

        I agree Walter.I run a trucking company out of Cleveland, OH. Truck drivers are professional drivers on the road. People need to be educated on how fast a truck can actually slow down- and how ignorant it is that people think you can stop because you have ” 18 wheels”. If regular vehicle drivers had to have a class to educate them on how big trucks work- we might have less problems on the road.

        I like following, not too closely, the big trucks. If they can’t get through something, then my 4 wheeler won’t either. Better to have the truck ahead of me, then behind me on icy roads.

        Natalie, I too run a trucking company out of Cleveland. I was out there yesterday with these people. I saw 12 spin outs/accidents in 70 miles. 11 of them were trucks. The truck drivers were totally to blame, racing to get by each other and weaving back and forth between lanes. I actually pulled into the Erie Islands plaza to just get away from them.Once I got back on the road I got into a pack of vehicles that ran single file in the center lane at 40 mph, we had no problems at all.
        I want to know where were all of the Plows and Troopers. I saw 1 trooper with an accident and 6 plows, only 2 of the plows were working, the rest were parked. On a sunny day there are troopers everywhere, in inclement weather they are only out there when called upon. If these people did there jobs yesterday 1,2, or even all 3 lives might have been saved.

    My issue is driving in the morning at 6:30 7:00am look to my left or right and see someone ON THE PHONE!!! Who the hell are you talking to at 6:30 in the morning??

      Wanna know who I was talking to at 6:30 this morning? I was on the phone with my mom trying to get to the hospital only to find out that it was too late and my grandmother had passed away. Think about it before you judge people.
      I don’t like talking on the phone while driving, but some instances are an exception.

        Some areas now require both hands on the wheel, and for you to pull off to a safe area in order to use your phone. Unless you have bluetooth, of course. Just like ORC 4511.204, for texting.

    The road dept knew this was coming and did a poor job. if they were having “a hard time”, then they should’ve closed the road. Road should’ve been pre-treated. Also, the amount of available brain cells on the avg driver is scarey. People are uneducated, and they panic. They drive too fast in hazardous conditions. My condolences to the victims, and a speedy recovery to the injured.

        Well they could have treated last night. The roads were a sheet of ice this morning going in. It was worse than when I went home last night!!! No salt anywhere that I seen. I’m on the west side and it was the worst ever. Maybe they are low on salt, but yikes, do something! A 15 minute drive this morning took me 45 minutes. The roads should have been a lot better this morning, not worse.

    Well, actually.., the ODOT did do their job but couldn’t treat the roads prior due to the would wash it off. Since 8 AM yesterday (Wednesday) most of the northern Ohio counties were under a Level 3 snow advisory, which means do not go on the roads or chance a ticket or arrest. But some people think that they can drive in it anyways. Prayers to all the victims and their families.

      I was at work when they issued a Level 3 – that issued at 3 p.m.. How am I supposed to get home if I can’t drive there??

        I totally understand. Not doggin” you but you should have waited til it was safe to drive. And apparently.., it wasn’t for several people.

      What if the boss doesn’t care that it’s a Level 3 and you have to show up for work anyway? You people act like others are on the road at that hour to go shopping at the mall.

    I have been on the turnpike during a snow storm with whiteout conditions. The problem isn’t the people in passenger cars. It’s the truckers barreling down the road at 60 mph!!! Twice we had an irritated trucker almost push us off the road to try to get around us. We had one come right up to our bumper to try to get us to move into another lane when we had no where else to go. It was terrifying. If they cannot drive slower during dangerous conditions, they should be kept off the turnpike during snow storms.

    Plus there’s another thing people are forgetting for every 10 miles per hr that you are driving, you are to put that many car lengths between you, and until every one on this earth follows every single road rule and law (which will never happen) there will be accidents. All we can do is send prayers to individuals and their families that are hurt or killed and try our best to be the better driver.

    I would like to send my condolences to the families impacted by this tragedy. Many times on the highways, there are many very ignorant drivers whether in a big rig, pickup, or car. In my opinion, your destination is not going to pick up and leave! Take your time because no life is worth risking just to meet a deadline. Furthermore, employers should value the wellbeing of their employees and less about said deadlines. Without that employee your deadline means nothing!
