LORAIN, Ohio--A 39-year-old man is dead after his home caught fire early Sunday morning.
Firefighters were dispatched to the 400 block of Kentucky Avenue around 3:30 a.m. When they got there, they found Lonnie Mullett inside. They tried to do CPR on him, but he didn’t make it.
Terry Welser was good friends with the victim. He said he raced to the scene as soon as he heard the news.
“It’s hard for me to really take it all in because I mean, he’s like a brother to me,” he said. “It’s just sad. He’s someone I really loved with all my heart and now he’s gone. He’ll be greatly missed.”
He said Mullett had children and a girlfriend. None of them were there during the fire.
Jim Page lives near-by. He said he’s seen a few fires in his time, but nothing like this.
“The smoke was like super thick,” he recalls. “It was just flowing out of that building, every place it could come out of. That was the first thing I thought when I saw the fire department on scene; I thought God, I hope if anybody’s in there, they can get them out.”
Mullett lived in a duplex-style home. His neighbors weren’t hurt.
While there isn’t an official cause, the fire chief said all signs point to the kitchen. He said it appears Mullett had been cooking something.
