LAKEWOOD, Ohio — It was a big night at Lakewood High gym on Wednesday night as the Rangers took the floor against Brecksville-Broadview Heights.

Near white-out conditions as students wore white to support the Rangers.

It has been 40 years since Lakewood won a league title.

Phil Argento’s team broke the long, long drought as they clinched the West Shore Conference crown in recent weeks. Argento is no stranger to great hoops as he once was the cream of the crop in boys hoops in Northeast Ohio.

He once scored 66 points in a game for West High in the early 60’s en route to getting a scholarship to play for the Kentucky Wildcats.

Argento said it is significant to note how the players have bought in to the program the past six years with extra commitment and the results are very evident on the court.

On Wednesday night, even greater significance was on display, as Lakewood High was playing its final game on the East gym floor.

A lot of history took place on the court over the years, though Ranger team after Ranger team was unable to clinch a conference title.

Lakewood put the pressure on the visiting Bees all night long.

The game went into overtime, and in the end, the Rangers posted a 61-54 victory in the final game ever on that gym floor.
