BEDFORD HEIGHTS, Ohio-- It's a place where students develop into 21st century learners, where you'll find some budding musicians and where character counts.
Those are some ways to describe Heskett Middle School in Bedford Heights. It is this week’s FOX 8 Cool School.
Heskett is the only middle school in the Bedford City School District for 7th and 8th graders.
One of the goals is for teachers to help students work at their optimal level. “We have excellent teachers who care about us and our education. They give us the right support to help us succeed," 8th grader, Morgan Payton, said.
A relevant curriculum is designed to challenge the students and get them ready for a rigorous high school schedule.
And, expectations are high with a raised grading scale. "An ‘A’ instead of being 90% is 92%. Everybody has to work a little bit harder," 8th grader, Avandre Sayles, added.
Heskett prides itself on being a technologically-advanced place of learning. “We have a lot of computer classes. We have keyboarding and we have a lot of technology involved in our classes. It takes learning to a whole another level,” 7th grader, Yessica Berru, said.
Instead of using paper and pen, students take their tests on clickers. And, the results are immediate for the teacher and the students.
The music program hits a high note at Heskett with an outstanding orchestra and jazz band. "Music is important because it actually helps you with your use. You have to count notes and rests."
The 'You Be Yourself' mentoring program is a district-wide initiative built on making right choices. Students actually take character education classes because at Heskett, character counts.
The students celebrate the six pillars of good character every day: Caring, Citizenship, Trustworthiness, Respect, Responsibility and Fairness.
Heskett Middle is showing its Bearcat Pride with being named this week’s FOX 8 Cool School.
