CPP: Scam Originating from 801 Area Code
CLEVELAND — Several Cleveland Public Power customers were warned their power would be cut off if they didn’t pay a “representative” over the phone.
The utility company wants everyone to know these calls were part of a scam and advised others to be leery of similar incidents.
The calls were placed Wednesday and originated from the 801 area code in Utah.
“Residents should be cautious of anyone seeking payment over the telephone. The City of Cleveland’s Department of Public Utilities does not call asking for payment over the telephone and we do not accept payments at your home. Any suspicious activity like this should be reported to the Public Utilities Police at (216) 443-2426,” said Cleveland Public Power Commissioner Ivan Henderson.
The calls were under investigation.
