As Pope Francis stood nearby and thousands watched from St. Peter’s Square Sunday, two children released bright white doves as a peace gesture.

But a seagull and a crow pounced on the doves as they were released from the window at Apostolic Palace, according to Daily Mail.

According to Daily Mail, one dove lost some feathers but broke free from the seagull. The other was attacked by the crow. It’s not known what happened to the birds after they flew away.

The doves were reportedly released after Pope Francis talked about peace in Ukraine, where there have been clashes and fighting in recent days, according to Daily Mail.
