AVON LAKE, OH – More job layoffs than expected are coming to the Ford Ohio Assembly Plant in Avon Lake.

Ford is re-tooling the plant from producing Econoline vans to making chassis for trucks and recreational vehicles.

Ford executives expected the change to result in the loss of 100 jobs, but now it appears the job loss will be higher.

“The number of layoffs will be in the hundreds, but we just don’t know what that will be and we don’t know how far that goes up the seniority line,” said Avon Lake Mayor Greg Zilka.

About 1,800 people work at the Ford plant in Avon Lake. They contribute about
$1.8 million in income taxes to the local economy.

The mayor said any job loss will have an impact, but that plans are in place to maintain city services.

Mayor Zilka also said a planned summer shutdown to re-tool the plant might be a little longer than expected. He is awaiting information from Ford.

Ford is investing about $128 million in the Avon Lake facility, an indication it remains committed to the plant, despite the impending layoffs.
