A representative from Texas thinks changing the name of welfare could help increase public support for expanding welfare benefits, according to

Rep. Shelia Jackson Lee (D-Texas) argues that Medicaid, Medicare and Obamacare shouldn’t be looked out as handouts because many people who rely on the benefits are attempting to better their situation.

She went on to argue that maybe the name should be changed to something such as a “transitional living fund.”

Lee said the change would show an outreach to people who are “chronically unemployed.”

Seriously? Changing the name isn’t going to change the fact that it’s being abused. Spend the money on implementing drug testing not a name change!

Just call it ….funding for fat. Lazy people, who can have a ton of babies, go out and party, live ” the finer” life all on the taxes we pay? Or is that to much for them people to say????

  • Charlotte

We need to implement drug testing. We have to pass a drug test to get a jobso you should have to pass a drug test to get welfare.

doggercise: That’s why when you go to apply for Welfare it’s called the county welfare department, not the come and sign up for a variety of programs department. Or did I miss something

  • Judy

It’s amazing people can live on welfare for generations, but congress is arguing about extending unemployment for people thay have actually worked for a living and paid taxes faithfully!

  • doggercise

most of the programs are not technically called “welfare”. “welfare” is an umbrella term for a variety of programs. the stigma or reputation of this word in peoples’ minds comes from their experience running into a large portion of people on ‘welfare’.

Are there not more important issues to address than renaming welfare?
If going to change ….1st 6weeks call it transitional aid, after that let’s call it Free ride!

“Attempting to better their situation”. Bull. Most on welfare are career welfare recipients, they have no intentions of ever getting off of it. Leave it to a stinking liberal to try and color coat it from what it really is… A government handout, funded by taxpayers so lazy arse individuals can sit on their lazy arses and be taken care of.

Should be only available for people that really need it and for short term use….I was on the system when my child was diagnosed with cancer and returned to work the day after he was released from the hospital..I am a single mother of 4 and still managed to work and care for my children….changing the name of it will not help,,,rule changes are needed

This mutant, Shelia Jackson Lee (D-Texas,) has got to be one of the most STUPID people God ever put on the face of this earth. About the only people more stupid than she is would be those that vote for her.

Plenty of ugly responses, no surprise there. Yeah, there are people who out there who shamelessly abuse the system. And how is that different from worker’s compensation, disability and other funds that are meant for people who really need the help? Changing the name won’t change the minds of people who are stuck on the image of the dreaded ‘welfare queen’.

  • Sallie Homza

Really? They are wasting our tax $$ to change the name of “Welfare”?? Welfare is always going to be Welfare no matter what you call it….take a drug test to prove you are not using it to buy weed or other drugs, prove you need it and you get welfare…period.
