NORTH CANTON, OH — Walsh University students handed Pope Francis a handmade card Wednesday, the same day the Pope was named Time magazine’s ‘Person of the Year.’

The students are studying in Rome and got up early to get a good spot in the general audience in St. Peter’s Square.

According to Michael Cinson, the Director of Student Life, Rome Campus, the Pope’s motorcade stopped in front of the students and one of the guards saw the students’ heart-shaped sign; he asked if they wanted to give it to the Pope.

Cincon says the Pope read the card and kept it.

The card was designed by students Giovanna Rion of Dover and Kathleen Wagner of Akron and included well wishes from all the students in the Rome study program.

The card also asked the Pope to join the students for dinner at their residence in Castel Gandolfo, which is also the home of the Pope’s summer residence.

The students will return home on December 20.
