EATON TOWNSHIP, Ohio-- There's new video of a State Highway Patrol trooper pulling over an Oberlin man during a traffic stop in Eaton Township last month.

“At first, I was a little shocked because I just assumed it was overheating,” said Trooper Josh Grimm with the State Highway Patrol.

Trooper Grimm pulled over an 86-year-old male driver going westbound on S.R. 10 on Nov. 9.

“He had no idea that his vehicle was even smoking at the time. It was a heavy white plume of smoke,” said Trooper Grimm.

But video shows just how serious the situation was.

Trooper Grimm's dash cam was rolling as he ordered the driver to exit the vehicle and they hurried back to Grimm’s cruiser.

Seconds later, the engine burst into flames.

Then, as Trooper Grimm moved his cruiser to block traffic away from the burning van, the van exploded.

“I decided to put the vehicle in reverse to get us out of there,” said Trooper Grimm.

No one was hurt in the incident.

Trooper Grimm adds that drivers should not ignore the check engine light in your vehicle.
