AVON, Ohio-- Avon Middle School in Lorain County is the home of the eagles. And, these 7th and 8th graders continually soar to academic success. The latest recognition is being voted this week’s FOX 8 'Cool School.'

The students are focused on their studies. For more than ten years, Avon Middle School has been rated 'Excellent' or an 'Excellent with Distinction' school. "All the teachers help us so much and even after school to help tutor us, help us to know and achieve our goals,” 8th grader, Chris Mullins, said.

Spanish teacher, Nancy King, believes the student, teacher and parent partnership contributes to the success of the school. "The kids come here because they have great homes, great parents. They come here prepared to learn. So, we can push them and we can help them to excel. And, I think that's why we are a school of distinction," King said.

Many of the students at Avon Middle School are already taking high school level classes through the honors programs that include accelerated math classes. "We then accelerate them a full year, giving them a full load of Algebra I in grade seven. Then we put them through their geometry sequence in grade eight. So, leaving the middle school, they have two high school credits," math teacher, Robert Nieding, added.

The foreign language choices at Avon Middle School include Spanish, French and Mandarin Chinese. "I think it is very unique that we offer mandarin. A lot of schools, not even high schools offer it. And, it is a really different experience. The culture is completely different," 8th grader, Kaitlin Hall, said.

Avon Middle School prides itself on having one of the most comprehensive anti-bullying programs around. It is a school environment that allows all students to achieve.

“Campus Impact comes in once a month and they teach us about bullying and how to treat one another. And, I think it has had a great impact on us because everybody is so supportive and caring to each other. We all really get along here," 8th grader, Amy Reinker, said. Then fellow student, Hailey Janos, added, “We're all good and we soar like an eagle."
