SOLON, Ohio-- Employees at a wastewater plant reported to police that they discovered a human fetus.

The discovery was made on Friday, Nov. 29 around 2 p.m. at the City of Solon Water Reclamation Department on Cochran Road.

The facility handles some 75 miles of sanitary sewers and is designed to treats 5.8 million gallons of waste water per day.

Authorities said it appeared the fetus had entered the plant very recently. The remains were taken to the medical examiner's office for examination.

Late Monday a spokesperson released the results of the post-mortem examination.

According to Hugh Shannon, the fetus was a 15-week-old male fetus that would “fit in the palm of your hand.” But it was determined that he was a “non-viable” fetus, meaning he was incapable of surviving on his own.

No further tests are being conducted on the remains but police are continuing their investigation.

They want to know if this was the result of a spontaneous miscarriage, other medical issue or some sort of criminal activity.

Police are asking for help in identifying the mother. They want to make sure that she is okay and that she receives the medical and/or psychological care she might need.

Information on the identity of the mother can be forwarded to the Solon Police Department Detective Bureau at 440-248-1234.

Authorities say this is a good time to remind everyone of Ohio's Safe Haven laws which allow mothers to turn custody of unwanted infants over to healthcare, police or fire authorities without fear of consequences. CLICK HERE for more details on safe havens.

  • as concernes as anyone else

The article specifically says spontanious miscarriage is a likely possiblity. I’ve had two, except my doctor called them spontanious abortions. Its not a woman’s fault, the baby aborts itself for no known reason. And to top it off they don’t keep you at the hospital when it happens. They send you home to pass it yourself (first trimester of course). Stop acting as if there’s someone to blame, there may not be. People are so insane and quick to judge these days.

Sad, but the only person who really knows what happened is the mother. People are such jerks and so quick to judge. I had 5 miscarriages and my doc also called them spontaneous abortions.
