CLEVELAND – Christmas is three weeks from Wednesday and you still have time to make the holiday season brighter for your family.
The deadline to register for Toys for Tots is this Friday, December 6. Cleveland residents can visit any city recreation center to sign up to receive gifts this holiday season. Or, if you are in a position where you can help someone else, there are several organizations looking for donations.
“We find that we have more coming into us that are either low income or financially disadvantaged because of their situation,” said Madeline Medley from Adopt A Family Association.
Medley founded the organization in 1996 and has helped hundreds of families in need during the holidays. Her Parma office has pictures of smiling kids and piles of clothing waiting to be handed out. The mission of her non-profit is simple: to connect families in need with other families willing to help.
“We try to help those that are a priority to us that just, you know, for some reason just can't make it,” said Medley.
It’s not just children who can use some holiday cheer; just ask the almost 400 residents at the St. Augustine Health Campus in Cleveland.
“The seniors are often, kinda, the forgotten ones because they're quietly being cared for at home or in a nursing facility and people just don't necessarily think because they're wrapped-up in all of their own excitement,” said Dana Carns.
Many residents don’t have the resources or the family to help them get through the season. The facility is always willing to accept donations, including blankets, art supplies, etc., that will be distributed to those living at the facility.
“Christmastime you give to people you know or people that you're loved ones, but Christmastime means give to someone you don't,” said Lydia Wright.
