1 Killed, 1 Injured in Train Vs. Vehicle Crash

VERMILION TWP., Ohio — A 29-year-old Vermilion Township resident is dead, and another is in intensive care after a train collided with an SUV Wednesday night.

According to the Erie County Sheriff’s Office, Gregory Long, 29, was killed, and Joseph Murray, 31, is in the ICU at Mercys St. Vincent Medical Center in Toledo.

The accident happened at 10:40 p.m. at the Joppa Road train crossing.

Officials said the train was approaching the crossing, and that the gate arms were down and the lights were flashing at the time. According to police, one of the men drove the Chevy Tahoe they were riding in around the gates. After seeing the train, they began backing up and were hit.

The SUV rolled over, and both Long and Murray were ejected from the car.
The vehicle landed upside down in a ditch.
