CLEVELAND — Week #8 of FOX 8′s ‘Friday Night Touchdown‘ kicks off on Friday, October 18th at 11:00 p.m.

Each week during the 2013 high school football season, we nominate four area games to receive extended coverage both on air, and online, on the Friday Night Touchdown webpage.

Students, staff, players, coaches, fans and FOX 8 viewers are invited to vote for their favorite school or game.

The polls are closed and the game of the week is: Chagrin Falls at West Geauga.

FOX 8 Sports Director John Telich will provide extended coverage of the winning game on Friday night, both on-air and online.

Here were this week’s nominees:

A.  ROCKY RIVER (3-4, 1-2)  at  AVON (7-0, 4-0): A win on Friday would give Avon 17-straight regular season wins and all but lock up another West Shore Conference Championship. But Rocky River hopes to spoil the party. The Pirates have no trouble scoring points – they’ve scored at least 26 in every game this season. However, River’s defense has proven to be its Achilles’ heel. Coach Rick Adams’ squad failed on a two-point conversion try at the end of last week’s thrilling 56-55 loss to Westlake. Two weeks earlier, River scored 48 points, but still lost by four touchdowns, as North Ridgeville lit up the scoreboard for a season-high 76.  Under Coach Mike Elder, Avon has grown into a perennial power in the WSC and a legitimate contender for a State Championship in Division II. The Eagles are ranked 4th in Division II  and garnered two first-place votes in the most recent poll. Avon also sits atop the Region 4 Playoff standings, facing a potential opening round matchup with Massillon, or even conference rival, Midview.

B.  HUDSON (7-0, 2-0)  at  STRONGSVILLE (5-2, 1-1):  Hudson is ranked 6th in the Division I AP Poll and sits atop the rugged Region 1 Playoff race for a reason. The Explorers have navigated their way through a difficult schedule, beating five Division I opponents and handing both Brecksville (6-1) and Stow (6-1) their only losses of the season. But the road doesn’t get any easier for Coach Ron Wright and Senior QB Mitchell Guadagni. Hudson’s defense has carried the team all season, allowing just under nine points per game.  Safety John Zuccaro leads the Northeast Ohio Conference with seven interceptions.  Strongsville is enjoying a resurgence in 2013, after a few down years. Longtime Coach Russ Jacques has the Mustangs back in the hunt for Playoff berth in Region 1. RB Zach Kahn carries the load for Strongsville, which is undefeated at Pat Catan Stadium this season.

C. BEACHWOOD (5-2, 4-0)  vs  CUYAHOGA HEIGHTS (5-2, 3-1): This is a battle for first place in the CVC Metro Division. Beachwood has won four straight games, after starting the season 1-2. The Bisons are averaging 42 points per game and rely on their explosive offense to outscore opponents. Coach Ryan Williams’ team is still undefeated in conference, but face a very daunting schedule over the final three weeks, traveling to Cuyahoga Heights and unbeaten Kirtland (7-0), before hosting West Geauga (6-1) in week #10.  Beachwood is currently 4th in Region 15. Cuyahoga Heights’ two losses have come to a pair undefeated teams. The Redskins were  outplayed by Kirtland, which is riding a 42-game regular winning streak, but Heights made several unforced errors which cost them in a season-opening loss to Berlin Center Western Reserve (7-0). QB Jordan Martin was the FOX 8 Player of the week #4 when he accounted for all six touchdowns in a win over Fairport Harding. The Redskins have been plagued by turnovers in their two losses and Coach Al Martin’s team will need to protect the ball better to beat Beachwood. Cuyahoga Heights is 5th in the Region 19 Playoff race.

D. CHAGRIN FALLS (5-2, 3-1)  at  WEST GEAUGA (6-1, 4-0) This is a critical game in the CVC Chagrin Division. West Geauga currently leads the lead by one game over Chagrin Falls, Aurora and Kenston. The Tigers got off to a slow start, dropping two of their first four games, but Coach Mark Iammarino’s squad has righted the ship and reeled off three straight wins. Despite the two losses, Chagrin Falls leads the Region 11 Playoff race.  If the Tigers hadn’t lost by one point to rival Aurora, they would be riding a five game winning streak. QB Michael Brigeman leads the offense which has piled up 89 points over the past two weeks.  West Geauga is also lamenting a single point. Coach Lou Cirino’s Wolverines are ranked 8th in the Division III Poll and could be even higher, if not for heartbreaking loss, 35-34 to Padua back in week #3. If they could’ve scored one more point, they might be undefeated and even challenging St. Vincent-St. Mary for the top spot in Region 3. QB Connor Krouse leads a potent rushing attack and features four dynamic ball carriers.
