WESTLAKE, OH -- Westlake police are investigating a suspected road rage incident after witnesses said one driver beat another with a hammer.

"A 56-year-old Avon man was on his motorcycle. A 60-year-old Westlake man was in his pickup truck, and they didn't care for each other's driving," Westlake Police Capt. Guy Turner said.

A handful of bystanders called 911 as the men were fighting in the intersection at Columbia Road and Detroit Avenue about 3:30 p.m. Tuesday.

"The motorcycle guy came up to the window of the truck at the light and was banging on the window. The guy in the truck came out of the truck with a hammer and hit the guy with the motorcycle," a witness told a 911 dispatcher during a recorded phone call.

Witnesses told dispatchers that both men separated and left the scene in opposite directions.

An officer caught up with the man in the truck as he was getting on the highway, according to police.

The older man was treated at a hospital for an injured shoulder. Police also tracked down the motorcycle rider.

"When we finish our report, we will hand it over to the prosecutor and let him review the statements and decide who, if anybody, should be charged with what," Capt. Turner said.
