SHEFFIELD LAKE, OH - A former Cleveland police officer, well-known for his brushes with danger, survived another close call Tuesday evening.

Officer James Simone retired from the Cleveland Police Department but took a new job with the Sheffield Lake Police Department because he was "bored."

Simone was exiting his cruiser after making an arrest when the door was struck by a passing vehicle.

"A westbound car took the door out of my hand, stopped for a second and took off," Simone said. "One second earlier he would have killed me."

Police tracked down the hit and run driver using police dashcam video. Simone said he's bruised, but otherwise fine.

As for his many brushes with death over the years, Simone said, "When I get to heaven, I'm going to ask God why. I've been truly lucky. I've been shot, stabbed, run down. Things happen. But if you are not working, things are not going to happen. I'm going to work until the good Lord takes me."
