Mother Gets 16 Months for Cashing Dead Daughter’s Benefits
CLEVELAND– A woman will have to serve a federal sentence once she finishes her three-year sentence in state prison for tampering with evidence and abuse of a corpse.
India Parker, 37, was sentenced to 16 months in prison for stealing almost $41,000 in government benefits meant for her daughter, according to Steven M. Dettelbach, United States Attorney for the Northern District of Ohio.
The Cleveland woman’s five-year-old daughter died in 2006.
Parker admitted that she kept her daughter, Kaliyah’s, dead body in her house for at least a week, then placed the body in a garbage bin outside.
The body was never found, according to court documents.
Authorities said while Parker disposed of the body, she stole and converted to her own use more than $40,000 in Social Security payments made to her daughter and more than $1,000 in food stamp benefits.
Court documents also revealed, Parker told agency representatives that her daughter had been living with her, when Parker knew her daughter was dead.
Earlier this year, she pleaded guilty to two counts of theft of government property and five counts of making false statements
