CLEVELAND– Three people tread water in Lake Erie for almost an entire day, after their boat capsized.

The Coast Guard said it happened Saturday afternoon near Conneaut.

The three men were wearing life jackets and that probably saved their lives.

“The boaters involved in this incident are alive today because they did two very smart things: they had their life jackets on and they stayed with their boat,” said Michael Baron, recreational boating safety specialist at the 9th Coast Guard District Auxiliary and Recreational Boating Safety Branch.

They had been treading water for 21 hours, when a good Samaritan spotted and rescued them, Sunday morning.

They were taken to an area hospital, possibly with hypothermia.

The boaters’ names are not being released.
