CLEVELAND — A K-9 unit is assisting police in searching for the people who attempted to start off the work week by stealing a safe from a gas station.

Their efforts were not only unsuccessful, but they also lost their truck in the process when they abandoned it.

The Cleveland Division of Police told Fox 8 News the safe was taken from the Speedway at the corner of Munn and Warren roads in the 1 a.m. hour on Monday.

A truck was backed through the front windows during the operation, shattering glass and mangling the facade.

A short time later, an officer noticed the truck on I-90 and found it to be suspicious.

It was unclear if the people were ever pulled over, but police said the suspects bailed, leaving the vehicle and safe behind.

The Cleveland Division of Police said the Speedway has been robbed in a similar manner in the past.
