ASHLAND, Ohio-- An escaped inmate’s freedom was cut short after an alert store clerk and customer took matters into their own hands.

Olivesburg General Store is known for ice cream and friendly customer service.

But as security video shows, on Thursday, employees and customers served up a scoop of justice.

Clerk Greg Gallaway and Mark Cooper, a customer, recognized escaped inmate James Myers and quickly got him apprehended.

“My legs were shaking,” Gallaway said. “I was pretty scared.”

Myers escaped from Mansfield Correctional Institution Wednesday night.

He is serving a 40-year to life sentence for the rape and kidnapping of a Summit County woman.

Police told store employees Thursday morning that Myers may be in the area but those who work at the store never dreamed he would actually come through the doors.

A copy of Myers' picture was placed at the store counters just in case anyone in the store happened to spot him.

“I was like almost sure it was him but then when someone else also thought it was him, I knew right away it was,” Gallaway said.

Gallaway said Myers didn’t fight back or say anything while waiting for police to arrive.

The store owner said she couldn’t be more proud of her employees and the customer.

She said she doesn’t know Cooper but wants to thank him. “Great job,” said owner Connie Crossen. “I would want him in a fight with me, watching how he took him down, great job; he was great.”

Myers was taken back to prison and was transferred to a higher security prison in southern Ohio.
