BALTIMORE — Scott Kazmir flirted with a no hitter and yet was in the dugout for the final two innings of a nail biting 4-3 Cleveland victory in Baltimore.

Kazmir coasted through the first six innings, giving up just a walk.

He took a 2-0 lead into the 7th inning when things got a little interesting.

Manny Machado broke up the no-hit bid with a double to lead off the frame. He eventually scored, thanks in part, to an error on a pick-off throw to second base that got away from Asdrubal Cabrera.

Up 2-1, the Tribe would have liked to see Kazmir pitch longer, but he warmed up to start the bottom of the 8th inning and it was decided that he was done for the night.

Joe Smith came on and surrendered two runs for the Orioles to take a 3-2 lead. In a bit of irony, Smith got credit for the win and is now 4-0 on the season.

All looked bleak, but the Indians were able to score twice in the top of the 9th inning to take a 4-3 lead.

Lonnie Chisenhall grounded into a fielder’s choice to second base as Michael Brantley scored. Mike Aviles, pinch running for Jason Giambi who had doubled, came home as Drew Stubbs grounded into a fielder’s choice.

The 4-3 lead stood as Vinnie Pestano came on in the bottom of the 9th to record the save.

Game four of the series is Thursday night.
