Police: I-76 Crash Victims from California

AKRON -- The Summit County Medical Examiner's Office confirmed two people died in a crash on I-76 in Akron.

The collision happened around 7:45 p.m. Monday on the eastbound side of the highway at Grant Street.

A semi-tractor trailer failed to notice slowing traffic and attempted to swerve around another semi-tractor trailer but hit the back of the truck, the medical examiner's office said.

The driver and passenger in the truck that swerved were pronounced dead at the scene at 8:28 p.m.

Hazmat also responded after the accident.

All lanes of the highway had reopened as of 4:00 a.m. Tuesday.

The Akron Police Department confirmed the victims, ages 13 and 40, are from California. The 40-year-old victim has been identified as Patrick Owen. The 13-year-old's name has not been released.
