CLEVELAND, Ohio — The Cleveland Indians notched their third win in a row on Friday night before a crowd of just under 31,000 at Progressive Field. A grounder by Jason Kipnis plated the winning run as the Indians won 2-1.

The Nationals took a 1-0 lead in the third inning on a wild pitch by Indians starter Justin Masterson. It was the lone blemish in seven outstanding innings on the hill.

Masterson gave up one run, and struck out 10 batters. He was matched pitch for pitch by the Nationals’ Gio Gonzalez.

In the fourth inning, the Indians tied the game on a solo homer by Ryan Raburn. The game moved to a dramatic conclusion in the bottom of the ninth inning.

Michael Bourn stroked a single through the right side as Drew Stubbs, who singled to start the rally, was off and running. Stubbs got to third and was in position when Kipnis came to the plate. Jason hit a sharp grounder to first base.

The throw home was not in time, and Stubbs had scored the game winning run.

Joe Smith retired the side in the ninth to pick up the win.

The same two teams will play on Saturday night on Fox Television.
