ELYRIA, Ohio -- Open Door Christian School in Elyria is the largest private school in Lorain County with students from pre-school to high school. It is also the largest Christian school from Cleveland to Toledo.
It is non-denominational, with students from more than 100 area churches. These students have Bible study every day. "We have a time of worship, where even the students can get involved and lead. And, we actually, recently had a night of prayer where we prayed for the school and everyone's needs,” said 10th grader Gabe Sigmon.
Academically, these students excel. Their scores on standardized tests are higher than state and national averages. And, 95% of ODCS students go on to college. "Not just academics are important, but everything academically, spiritually, artistically, athletically, and in-service,” said Director of Admissions Bronwyn Tucker.
On some days, third graders put aside the textbooks to use i-Pads for classroom learning. "Sometimes we use them to write down subjects that we are working on. We use it for science, sometimes math and it's just really fun,” 3rd grader Stephen Pallas said.
ODCS offers ten varsity sports. Student athletes like Brianna Bryant see athletics as an extension of the classroom. "I think athletics and academics go hand in hand. I think athletics give us an incentive to work towards our school work and to give us something to look forward to at the end of the day,” she said.
The music program also stands out. ODCS has been selected as one of the best communities for music education in the country, with 45% of high school students in the marching band.
And, every student in every grade learns to serve, from tutoring others to mission trips to El Salvador. "I think that service is really important because it allows you to take what you learn and put it to use in the world. What's education if you're not going to use it,” 11th grader Alyssa Sooy said.
Spiritually, academically, artistically, athletically and service to others – that defines Open Door Christian School. And, that is also why it is such a “Cool School.”
