JERUSALEM — According to several reports, Professor Stephen Hawking is not taking part in a president’s conference hosted by Israeli president Shimon Peres.

According to NPR reporter Krishnadev Calamur, Hawking is withdrawing from the conference in Israel to protest that country’s treatment of Palestinians.

The scientist was scheduled to be a keynote speaker at the conference next month.  Conference organizers are not happy with his decision, but the boycott campaign has several other high-profile supporters.

The scientist suffers from Lou Gehrig’s disease and is severely disabled.
