CLEVELAND-- Most days, reporters chase stories all around town. Today, the story was within the walls of the TV station.

52-year-old Ariel Castro performed on Fox 8 News in the Morning.  He filled-in for a popular band, who did not want to be named in this story.  September 2003 was the date.  Band members confirmed his identity with FOX 8, this morning.

According to investigators, his performance would have been five months after Amanda Berry disappeared and about a year after Michelle Knight vanished.

“We often hear the cliché, he seemed like a nice fellow; he lived right next to me. That’s because individuals know how to mask their behavior; not just extreme individuals; we all learn that from a very young age,” said Dr. David Licate.  He studies criminal behavior. He’s also a professor at the University of Akron.

Precipitating events like losing a loved one, losing a job or even divorce can trigger extreme behavior.

Licate adds, “Major life changes, some profilers describe this as “the fall.” They try to point to this event in the person’s history.”

There are thousands of adults missing in America right now.  But when it comes to kids --take away custody disputes with moms and dad-- there are about 115 new cases every year.

Most criminals who display multiple personalities do understand the consequences of being caught.

“We often want to say these people are mentally diseased or defective. Fact is, many of these individuals displaying extreme behaviors are quite rational, intelligent and can hide behavior effectively,” according to Dr. Licate.

Every case is different.  One similarity appears to be narcissism.
