BARBERTON, Ohio -- There is something "magical" going on at one Summit County school that has been voted this week’s Fox 8 Cool School. Barberton Elementary West is completing its first year.
Two elementary schools merged to form this school for kindergarten through 4th grade. The district-wide philosophy calls for students to follow the magic five: Be respectful. Be responsible. Be safe. Be a problem solver. Be a learner.
Learning is what Barberton Elementary West students do best. They have a state rating of excellent. "Our teachers make a fun way of teaching so then we are excited to learn. And, we do fun projects, 4th Grader Lauren Morgan said.
This new school has the newest academic resources like smart boards in every classroom and all students take a computer class. "We sometimes use this for tests, like for math and reading tests. We read all the books that we needed and do the tests,” 4th Grader Zane Butz said.
Barberton Elementary West prides itself on addressing the individual education needs of every student. They have a gifted program. Most of the district special needs elementary students come to Barberton West, where they have specialized classrooms. "If a student excels and moves up to a higher level, or needs different services, that classroom is here to provide that,” Intervention Specialist Chrissy Burkey said.
In any classroom, you might find watch dogs --- DOGS as in Dads of Great Students. These volunteer dads assist the teachers. “Talk to the students, give them high fives. Mentor kids that may not have a positive role model in their home and we help the teachers in the classroom whenever we're needed,” Parent Volunteer Bill Stokes said.
A great teaching staff, excellent academics and a very family oriented school – that’s what makes Barberton Elementary West such a “Cool School!”
