AKRON — A Barberton man charged with aggravated murder has pleaded not guilty in his mother’s death.

Michael Petrie appeared in Summit County Common Pleas Court Wednesday. His bond is set at $1 million.

Investigators found Petrie in a home with the body of his mother who had been deceased for an “extended period of time,” the Barberton Police Department said.

On April 3, officers made a welfare check on Maureen Petrie, 67, on 23rd Street NW in Barberton after her family members had not had contact with her in about six months.

When no one answered the door, officers went inside where they discovered Petrie’s body.

Maureen Petrie’s 32-year-old son Michael was also in the house.

The Barberton Police Department said he “made statements that implicated himself in the death of his mother.”
