(CNN) — People throughout Massachusetts are being urged to observe a moment of silence Monday at 2:50 p.m., exactly one week after the Boston Marathon bombings.

Boston Mayor Thomas Menino and Gov. Deval Patrick announced the planned moment on Sunday.

The silence will be followed by ringing of bells.
