SHEFFIELD TWP., Ohio — Several children were injured, some seriously, when a car crashed into Broadway Assembly Church in Sheffield Township Saturday.

According to the Ohio State Highway Patrol, it happened on Broadway Avenue just north of Cooper Foster Park Road at around 6:30 p.m. Saturday.

Police said Jose A. Guerra, 26, of Lorain, was driving a black Ford Fusion south on Broadway Avenue and had six passengers between the ages of 6 and 14 in the car at the time.

Several of the passengers were unrestrained, and one was sitting on the floorboard in the back seat.

According to reports, the car went left of center and off the east side of the road. It then hit a mailbox, two traffic sign posts and an embankment.

The car continued across the parking lot of the church before hitting landscape rocks, a mailbox and, finally, the church.

There was significant damage to the church with exterior rocks and bricks being thrown into a classroom, according to reports. There was a church function inside the church at the time, but no one was in the classroom, said police.

Guerra sustained non-incapacitating injuries from the crash and was wearing a seat belt. Alcohol and drugs were not suspected as a factor, but Guerra did not have a valid drivers license, said police.

The following passengers were seriously injured:
— A 7-year-old girl who was wearing a lap and shoulder belt in the front seat
— A 10-year-old boy who was sitting in the back seat unrestrained
— A 6-year-old boy who was sitting on the back seat floor board

The following passengers had minor injuries:
— A 12-year-old girl who was sitting in the back seat unrestrained
— A 14-year-old sitting in the back seat unrestrained

A 7-year-old, who was also in the back seat unrestrained, was not injured.

Police said there were no booster seats in the vehicle at the time of the crash.

Agencies on scene included Elyria Township EMS, Sheffield Township Fire and EMS, Lorain County Sheriff’s Department, Columbia Gas, Rich’s Towing and the Ohio State Highway Patrol.
