MESA, Ariz. (KPHO) — A man brandishing a ballpoint pen might have written himself a ticket to jail after he was arrested on suspicion of trying hold up a CVS drug store in Mesa on Thursday night.

Mesa police said Daimarkus Maxwell was arrested near the drug store Thursday night and booked into jail on suspicion of armed robbery.

Police said a man was wearing a mask and held the pen like a knife when he went into the store at 2807 N. Power Road and demanded money from the clerk about 8:40 p.m.

Apparently undaunted by the weapon, the clerk refused and the suspect ran from the store. Soon after, an officer spotted a man matching the suspect’s description near a canal just east of the drug store.

Police questioned the suspect and said they found evidence linking him to the crime.

A police spokesman said that even though no money was taken, the law allows for a charge of armed robbery.
