GRAFTON TOWNSHIP, Ohio – Officials with the Ohio State Highway Patrol released the name of the teen who was pulled from a pond after a car accident in Lorain County.

Dominic Zunis, 18, of Elyria, received treatment at the scene and was then flown to MetroHealth Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.

From evidence and witness statements, investigators concluded Zunis was traveling northbound on Mennell Road, ran a stop sign at State Route 57, and drove off the north side of State Route 57 on Saturday morning.

His vehicle became submerged in a partially frozen pond in about 10 feet of water.

Emergency personnel were alerted about the accident at 7:21 a.m. and were on the scene in five minutes.  The vehicle was not even visible.

It took rescuers over an hour to recover the vehicle.  Zunis was still inside.

The pond was searched, but no other victims were found.

According to the Elyria Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol, alcohol is suspected as a factor in the crash.

The agencies on scene that assisted were the Lorain County EMA, Metro Life Flight, Grafton Village Fire Department, American Red Cross, Grafton Police, Grafton Township Fire Department, Eaton Township Fire Department, ODOT, Lorain County Sheriff’s Office, and the Lorain County Dive Team.

The Ohio Investigative Unit is assisting in the investigation.
