Neighbor After Deadly Home Invasion: ‘Unsafe Here’
CLEVELAND, Ohio — Police are investigating a fatal home invasion on the city’s west side.
According to the Cuyahoga County medical examiner, Antoin Sheffield, 25, was killed when he was shot in the chest on Tuesday morning inside his West 49th Street residence.
Cleveland police said Sheffield was home with several other adults and five children around 12:30 a.m., when four men entered the house wearing masks and demanded money. While they searched the house, police said Sheffield was shot and killed.
“The little girl said that she saw two guys with ski masks, they were trying to rob with guns in their hands,” said Gilberto Bermudez, a neighbor.
According to Bermudez, several of the children sought shelter in his house while police were investigating at the scene.
“It was bad guys going after bad guys,” said another neighbor, John Verzi. “You have people come into the neighborhood and all of a sudden all this activity starts happening, so I think it was just an opportune time for somebody to try to go in after another guy.”
Several residents said the victim’s family has only lived on the street for a few months. Some, who didn’t want to be identified, told FOX 8 News that they lived in fear.
“Unsafe here, unsafe,” said a neighbor. “We should have more cops, you know, on the street.”
No one has been arrested, but anyone with information is asked to call homicide detectives at (216) 623-5464.
