BATH, Ohio -- At Revere Middle School in Bath, academics come first. It has been rated "excellent" or better every year since the state started rating schools.
There are three different languages taught here. And, there is an emphasis on science, technology, engineering and math.
Every 7th and 8th grader is required to take a tech design class, with a choice of 16 different interactive courses. Technology Education Teacher Joe Williams said students choose three courses in the 7th grade and three different courses in the 8th grade. "And, some of the courses range from artificial intelligence, bio-technology, engineering and stress analysis, residential wiring, flight simulations, space and rocketry,” Williams said.
In addition to textbooks, students study the Civil War using computers. History Teacher Melanie Stuthard said it's a way to use 21st century technology to learn about something that happened many years ago. “They have a template that makes it look like a Facebook page and so they have to make up a Facebook page, Facebook profile for that civil war person,” Stuthard added.
Revere Middle School students are involved in five different academic competitions, covering all aspects of the core curriculum. And, they are involved in many extra-curricular activities. "There are all sorts of things like Power of the Pen, Science Olympiad; there's Math Counts. There's almost anything you can think of besides your athletics,” eighth grader Sarah Blake said. Revere offers ten different sports at the middle school.
"When students feel a part of a learning community and they have that sense of belonging, they are much more likely to succeed both inside and outside of the classroom,” parent Beth Chonko said.
Students have their own reasons that set Revere Middle apart from other schools. "Revere Middle School is a cool school because we have teachers that are actually willing to help you and make you succeed,” sixth grader Stephen Gentner said.
Other students said the school’s great football program and its tech lab make Revere Middle such a FOX 8 “Cool School.”
